Russian Charoite takes it's name from the Yakutia Chary River in Russia where it was discovered in the 1940s. It can vary in color from a light lilac to a dark purple. The stone can be opaque or translucent. It's chatoyancy gives it a cat's eye effect.
It is a harder stone, with a Mohs rating of 4.5 - 5. The stone is sensitive to sunlight. It should be cleaned with warm water and mild soap then dried with a soft cloth to prevent scratches.

Rhodochrosite can be found in Argentina, South Africa, Peru, Montana, Colorado, Russia, Romania, Gabon, Mexico, and Japan . It is a pink stone with white to cream colored striations through it. Due to the over-mining of this gemstone, Argentina no longer allows it to be exported.
Rhodochrosite is rated at 3.5 - 4 on the Mohs scale. While a good choice for earrings and pendants, the stone should not be used for bracelets or rings as it doesn't take well to abrasion. The stone can be cleaned with warm water and a mild soap, then dried with a soft cloth.
